Playing House

As a kid I loved my Wendy House as it's called in Northern Ireland. With it's fake windows, Velcro doors and distinctive plastic smell, I spent hours in there making home.

Wendy Houses or play tents are way more sophisticated now - adorned with favorite cartoon characters, elaborate constructions have real windows and some are bigger than a DC studio apartment. Just name your price and your Little One can have their very own piece of home.  Here are some of my favorite indoor playhouses.

Cardboard Playhouse

For the budding designer these American made cardboard offerings expand for playtime and collapse for storage.  You can get a house, a castle and even a pirate ship! All priced under $45 Miss O will be getting one of these for Christmas.

A bit over the top in terms of it's girlie quota but one can never have too much whimsical in their life! On Haba's site for $249.99 this tent is sure to keep your little princess happy.

GigaTent Camelot Village Play Tent

Invite your little one and their friends to recreate the legend of King Arthur in their very own castle. It's two tents held together by Velcro so your kids can play at different ends if they're having one of those days!

Toadstool Play House

The Land of Nod have some of the cutest play houses I've seen. You can get a garage, an ice-cream truck, a camper van or a rocket. They've done a great job!

We joked recently that since we moved to America we've been playing house. We left a large detached house in Hillsborough, Northern Ireland and now in Northern Virginia we can just about afford to rent a two bed row house. It doesn't feel like we live in a grown-ups house! But you know, maybe that's a good thing. Maybe that's an invitation to stay childlike.

Miss O makes home wherever she is with people who love her. She reminds us that home isn't about the size of the space but the love that is in it; home isn't about the volume of stuff you have but the number of people you call friends who regard your place as their home too.
